Home Gyms
Now more than ever home gyms are important. I can honestly say that I never saw this social distancing and shelter at home coming. I first set up my home gym for when I got older and would not be able to go to the gym anymore.Â
But, do you dream of having your own home gym but don’t think you have room-in your home or your bank account? I realize that you may not need or want something as commercial as I have setup. But you can have a home gym no matter what your budget or your space!Â
Fortunately, there are options. Home gyms can be as big or as small and compact as you want or need.Â
Steps to setup
Step 1: Find a space in your home that you can setup as a dedicated workout area. This doesn’t mean that you to clear out an entire room. You can find a small area of your living room if that is the only place that you have available. If you live in an apartment, this may be the perfect area or even a section of your bedroom.
Step 2: Clear the clutter. You can’t get a good workout in if the area is messy and cluttered. You need room to move around and stretch. It is important to stretch in between sets. This helps to prevent soreness and cramps. That is very important to remember. Also, when your area is free of clutter, you tend to feel more motivated. I know when my workout area is cluttered or messy, I focus on the mess more than I do on my workout.
Step 3: Consider your budget. This is probably the biggest thing you need to consider. Remember, you do not have to go broke trying to set up home gyms with expensive equipment. It is not about having the commercial line of products, it is about purchasing the equipment that meets your needs.Â
Step 4: Stock your gym. This goes without saying, that if you are going to have a home gym, you need to stock it with the correct equipment. I planned my home gym space to fit my needs. I like a variety of equipment that includes single move use as well as machines that allow for you to work out multiple muscle groups.
These are some of the things that I would recommend if you are setting up your home gym on a budget or in a small space
-
- Knee Sleeves for Support
- Cable System
- Adjustable Dumbells
- Yoga Mat for comfort
If you have the room and the finances, then an all-in-one machine is definitely the way to go
It’s funny how the changing times and not my age pushed me to using my home gym consistently. And you know what, even though I miss my workout partner, it it has given me the opportunity to spend time teaching my son how to workout safely and efficiently. These are times that I am truly enjoying. I must admit; however, that I do look forward to when I will be able to get back to my commercial gym. But… I think I will now make it a mixture of home gym and commercial gym workouts.
I thought it would be useful to put together a little comparison of home gyms and commercial gyms and the equipment you could get in a convenient table for you. This may make it easier to decide what kind of equipment you want to get. If you want something that will last for many years with very low maintenance (and your budget can stand it), then I would go with the commercial equipment.
New… used… it depends on what you are comfortable with. I don’t mind buying used commercial grade equipment. The way I bought my commercial grade equipment is I would ask the gym if they were updating any of their equipment soon. If they were, then let me know and we could see if we could work out a deal that would be acceptable by both parties. You don’t know until you ask. And, you know what? You don’t have to buy the used equipment.
Have I bought the home gym non-commercial grade equipment? Sure I have. I have taken care of that equipment so it has lasted me as well. Just shop smart. Don’t let your young kids play on it. I had my equipment even when my kids were little, but they knew it was not a play toy and that they were not allowed on it.Â
