What Am I Doing?
It seems like everything right now is centered on COVID19 and rightly so. Let’s face it, it’s on the news, it’s all over our social media, and it’s on everyone’s minds when they are out trying go get food or essential items for day to day living. The biggest question is… how do we change our life and lifestyle to fit what is quickly becoming a new “Normal”? How do we stay fit and healthy – whether it is COVID19, the flu or anything else that has to deal with health?
I am a self-proclaimed “gym rat”. I love to get out to the gym and get a great workout in. It is me. It is part of my life. But, I had to make some changes when shelter in place came in to play because of COVID19. Fortunately, I had a home gym setup. I have a lot of the equipment that I need to keep my workout routines going. I am not saying you need to go to the extent that I have. You have to think about the space you have and the budget when you plan this out.
I have a basement that has room for me to have a top of the line home gym.
Some things that I recommend are:
Elliptical Machine :  “An elliptical trainer or cross-trainer is a stationary exercise machine used to stair climb, walk, or run without causing excessive pressure to the joints, hence decreasing the risk of impact injuries. For this reason, people with some injuries can use an elliptical to stay fit, as the low impact affects them little”. (1)
Dumbbells: “The dumbbell, a type of free weight, is a piece of equipment used in weight training. It can be used individually or in pairs, with one in each hand”. (2)
Exercise Cables : “The cable machine is a large piece of gym equipment that has adjustable cable pulleys. The resistance of the cables allows you to perform numerous exercises in a variety of directions. Some machines have one or two cable stations, while others have multiple”. (3)
Weight Bench:Â Â “A weight training bench is a piece of equipment that has a resemblance to a normal bench, but is designed for use in weight training”. (4)
Like I said, consider your space and your budget. And set your gym up with what works best for you. It is not a one size fits all kind of thing. The main thing is to exercise. This helps boost your immunity. Not only to help you to either fight off COVID19, but also to help you stay healthy in general.
Maybe you didn’t go to the gym before and this is new territory for you. Or maybe this is the reset you needed. You see that you can find a small place to carve out your own personal gym. And even if you can’t get the equipment, you can always do body weight exercises. Something, anything, to get your body moving and heart pumping!Â
What Else?
Besides having to relocate my gym to my basement, my life has not really changed much. However, I have found myself spending more time going for walks outside while practicing safe social distancing. I am definitely concentrating on staying healthy.
That brings me to something else I have always done and that is to supplement. I have some favorites and you can find those right here. I honestly feel that these supplements have helped me steer clear of some of the illnesses that are going around. Black seed oil, probiotics, vitamin D… these are some great ones. If you don’t have a good balanced diet, that can make your body run down especially when you are expending energy and calories working out. Protein, vitamins, good meals all work into the equation of staying healthy.
Don’t Throw Caution to the Wind
Just because you workout and take good supplements does not mean that you can throw caution to the wind. These practices do NOT make you invincible. It is important to practice social distancing and hand washing and even wearing masks or protective gear when you are out. I truly believe that this will become the new normal for our lives for the foreseeable future.Â
I do believe that we will all get back out and do things but it may not look like it did before the virus took hold of our lives. Good or bad… it is here to stay.Â
Respect
These are the adjustments that I have made in my daily life. Even though I miss going to the gym, I realize that it is something that I have to do. It is important for my health as well as those around me. Life doesn’t have to stop because we have to social distance or shelter in place. But we have to learn to respect each other and we can show that by taking these healthy measures. Eventually, there will be treatment, vaccine or cure for COVID19 but until then (and even after) let’s just respect each other. You would hate to bring that nasty COVID19 bug home to your family or friends.
Stay healthy and safe! And if you have any comments or suggestions to share, please do. I love to hear what you have to say! We can all learn from each other!Â
