  3. Myth: The Embarrassment Factor: This was a hurdle that almost prevented me from scheduling the procedure. The idea of exposing such an intimate part of my body felt overwhelming. But, I came to realize that medical professionals approach the situation with utmost professionalism, focusing solely on your health.
  4. Myth: I’m Healthy, so I Don’t Need It: This myth was a wake-up call. Colorectal issues often develop silently, showing no symptoms until they’ve progressed. Regular screenings act as a preventive measure, catching potential problems before they become serious.

The Process

The process starts three days prior to the procedure.

I scheduled my procedure around the middle of July. I was told that I would be sent my “prep” material and instructions I needed to follow.

  • Stay Close to a Restroom: During the intense phase of the prep, staying near a restroom was a must. I created a little reading nook nearby to pass the time.
  • Stay Comfortable: Wet wipes and a soothing cream became my allies during this time, helping to prevent discomfort from repeated bathroom visits.

There are now other options for people to screen for colon cancer but only if your risk is low. There are at home test kits. The reason I wrote this post is to encourage others to consult with their doctor and, if it is recommended, go ahead and have this procedure done. Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cancer killer for men and women combined in this country which is why it is very important to get screened. After looking back, it was a breeze and provided me with such a relief of knowing that I have one less thing to be concerned about regarding my health.
