Dead Sea has Amazing Benefits
I just recently returned from a trip to Egypt and Jordan. One of the stops I made was the Dead Sea.
It is located at the lowest elevation on the surface of the earth and is 10 times saltier than normal sea water. Therefore, remember to only spend 10-15 minutes in the water and avoid getting any of it in your mouth or eyes.
And, for you ladies out there, don’t shave before you go in the water or it will sting your legs.
It is probably most famous for its amazing buoyancy which allows people to float without any effort. The concentration of the salt in the water causes the density to be so great that you have no other choice but to float.
And, if you are wondering… I did float which shocked me because I usually can’t float. It was a magical experience. But there is more to this salty body of water than just being able to float.

People swear to the healing powers of the Dead Sea. I can tell you, personally, from being in the water, that it truly holds some magic.
Many people use the water and mud from it for the benefits they get. Since Biblical times, people have gone to there for its benefits.
Loaded with a unique blend of minerals, the water and mud are used to relieve skin disorders, sinusitis, and osteoarthritis to name a few.
You may be wondering if I experienced any benefits from my short time in the water. To be honest, I did. My skin felt so silky and moisturized.
Even my tired, achy feet and back felt refreshed. It was amazing. I decided to try the mud bath on my knee that I had surgery on. I could not believe it, but it felt 100% better. I became a believer in the healing properties then!

But let’s look more at what things Dead Sea Salt and Mud offer. The benefits from the mud and salts have been backed up by research. Some of these include, but most certainly are not limited to:
- Moisturizes Skin
- Helps Reduce Irritation From Eczema
- Helps Fight Acne
- Detoxifies Skin
- Soothes Tired Muscles
Moisturizer
Dead Sea salt has amazing properties that can hydrate and moisturize dry skin. One of the main components of Dead Sea salt is magnesium, which hydrates your skin by directly strengthening the skin’s lipid barrier. You may think because it is salt that it will dry your skin out. On the contrary, Dead Sea salt is one of the best moisturizers you can find for your skin.
The next best thing to being in the Dead Sea itself is taking a Dead Sea salt soak at home. Turn down the lights, fill up your bath tub, add quite a bit of Dead Sea salt(you can get it in a bath bomb and bath liquid for ease) and enjoy your Dead Sea salt bath. You will definitely love how your skin feels when you step out of the tub.
Reduces Irritation From Eczema
Many people have skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or some other chronic skin condition. The itchy, dry, irritating characteristics of these conditions seem to be relieved when people have used some of the salts from the Dead Sea.
The minerals that are in this magical water consists of:
- bromide 0.3-0.6%
- magnesium chloride 31-35%
- sodium chloride 3-8%
- calcium chloride 0.1-0.5%
- potassium chloride 20-28%
- sulphates 0.05-0.2%
These minerals not only boost hydration but also reduce inflammation. Not only do these help relax you, it also helps hydrate dry skin that are caused by these different skin conditions.
Dead Sea salt will help you feel less itchy. Your skin will feel much more hydrated that will last a long time. You can try Dead Sea salts as an alternative to remedies that you may currently be using, or you can use them in conjunction with them.
According to Medical News Today, a study was conducted on people suffering from eczema.
“The study participants submerged one forearm in a water solution containing 5% Dead Sea salts for 15 minutes. They submerged the other arm in tap water.
The researchers assessed their skin quality at the beginning of the study as well as once per week over the course of 6 weeks. By the end of the study, they noted that those who had submerged their skin in Dead Sea salts had better skin hydration and reduced signs of roughness and inflammation.” (1)
Acne Fighter
Most of us have been there. The dreaded acne. If you have kids and they are teenagers, I am sure some of yours are fighting these blemishes too. While most people turn to chemicals and antibiotics as a remedy to acne, Dead Sea mud has been shown to have some effect on clearing out clogged pores as well as absorbing the excess oils that are common with acne.
According to Healthline.com, “Dead Sea mud has been tested and proven to have an antimicrobial effect on strains of bacteria that live on human skin. Since overgrowth or presence of certain bacteria can lead to acne, it’s possible that this is why Dead Sea mud has been used to treat breakouts since biblical times.” (2)

Not only is the mud healing, but the salts from the sea are therapeutic as well. The salt works by cleansing the cells and killing bacteria while also promoting healthy pH levels in the skin.
Detoxifies
The big thing about the salts and mud is that they both have wonderful antifungal, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties. These properties help cleanse and detoxify the pores by driving out oils, dirt, and other impurities. When your body is detoxified, you feel more relaxed and refreshed. Your energy levels increase and your overall mood improves.
How do you detoxify with the salts? You can add them to the your bath or use them as an exfoliator. The sulphates in these natural salts can detoxify, while the grainy texture can smooth blemishes and stimulate blood flow to your tired skin and body.
Think about it… at the end of hard day or week, you reach for your Dead Sea Salts and detoxify and rejuvenate.
Soothes Tired Muscles
If you are like me, some days your muscles are tired. Whether it is from a brutal workout or just a long day/week at work, you need to sooth those tired muscles.
On days like these, it’s a great idea to have a bag of Dead Sea salt on hand to use when you just want to relax and unwind. How do you use this?
Dissolve up to two cups of Dead Sea salt in warm bathwater, stirring to distribute evenly. Once dissolved, soak in it for at least 20 minutes. Your body will thank you for it.
Bottom Line
Dead Sea Salts and Mud are world famous for their therapeutic and healing properties. These have been used since Biblical times and are still a great go to for skin and overall body conditioning. To have experienced this magical body of water in person only enhances my opinion and experience with the Dead Sea Salts and Mud. If you can’t get to Jordan in person, definitely add this to your overall health routine. Just remember that this is for external use only.
